Hello January! Five of us met at Champion Park on Saturday. Though the morning dawned foggy and drizzly, by 8:15 the sun came out and so did the birds! We saw 25 species and really enjoyed the woodpecker show. Ladderbacked, Downy (pictured below), and Red-bellied called and lined up again and again in the same few trees.

We had good looks at a Myrtle Yellow-rumped Warbler with very distinct black lores and cheeks, giving it a mask-like look. We had good looks at an Audubon's Yellow-rumped Warbler with its bright yellow throat and rump.

Eastern Bluebirds, Chipping Sparrows, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, Orange-crowned Warblers, Eastern Phoebe, and singing Carolina and Bewick's Wrens rounded out the rest of the morning.

Bird photos provided by Rick. Thanks, Rick! See you Feb. 8 at Walnut Creek Metro Park for another accessible bird walk!
